Does Medicare Cover Hospital Bills?

When it comes to enrolling in Medicare, you want to make sure you will have the coverage you need. If you’re looking for coverage for hospital costs, whether that be for both inpatient or outpatient care, Original Medicare (Parts A and B) has you covered.

What Does Part A Cover?

Part A is the hospital insurance plan of Medicare. It will provide coverage for your inpatient hospital costs. When admitted to the hospital, some of the Medicare-covered services will include:

  1. Prescription drugs used as part of your inpatient treatment

  2. Meals

  3. General nursing

  4. Semi-private rooms

  5. Other services needed as part of your inpatient treatment

When it comes to inpatient hospital care, you can receive coverage when you are admitted to a(n):

  1. Acute care hospital

  2. Inpatient rehabilitation facility

  3. Inpatient psychiatric facility

  4. Critical access hospital

What Does Part B Cover?

Part B is the medical insurance part of Medicare, which covers your outpatient services. Some of the covered outpatient services can include:

  1. Lab tests

  2. Preventive services

  3. Medically necessary services

  4. Medical supplies

  5. Screening services

  6. Mental health services

  7. Emergency services

  8. Some prescription drugs

  9. X-rays and other services

Part B will cover 80% of Medicare-approved services.

What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?

Part A and B together is known as Original Medicare, but you can have their coverage, including prescription drug coverage, with a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. Medicare Advantage plans are individual insurance policies sold by private insurance companies that provide the same coverage as Original Medicare and may include additional coverage benefits.

If you’re looking to have your Medicare coverage under a single plan, then a Medicare Advantage plan might be something to consider.
